Gutter Guard Selection Guide

Gutter guard system installed on residential gutters

Gutter guards can dramatically reduce the time you spend on a ladder cleaning gutters. But no product on the market eliminates maintenance entirely, and choosing the wrong guard for your property can create problems that are more difficult — and more expensive — to fix than simply cleaning your gutters by hand.

This guide explains the key factors every homeowner should consider before selecting a gutter protection system, with specific reference to the Alu-Rex Gutter Clean Pro® lifetime warranty system and Gutter Clean System® 25-year prorated warranty product lines available through Gutter Protect.

1. No Gutter Guard Is Completely Maintenance-Free

This is the single most important point to understand. Every reputable manufacturer — including Alu-Rex — acknowledges in their warranty documentation that some periodic maintenance will always be required.

In sheltered roof areas or overhangs on shallow pitched roofs, debris may collect where air cannot lift away debris. These areas must occasionally be cleared to keep Alu-Rex products working properly.

What Maintenance Looks Like in Practice

  • Surface debris: Leaves, seed pods, or pine needles that land on top of the guard may need to be swept off by hand or rinsed with a garden hose if wind does not clear them naturally.
  • Sheltered or low-pitch areas: Sections of roof with little airflow — such as under an overhang or a valley — can accumulate debris even on the best systems.
  • Snow and ice: Removing heavy snow buildup from the roof is recommended to prevent ice dams and structural loading that can damage both the guard and the gutter.
  • Gaps and seals: Any opening larger than the size of a perforation at overlaps, corners, or joints must be sealed at all times to maintain warranty coverage.

The practical benefit is that maintenance becomes less frequent and less intensive — not eliminated. Think of it as going from cleaning your gutters three or four times a year to an occasional visual check and light sweep.

2. Match the Guard to Your Debris Type

Not all gutter guards perform equally against all types of debris. Your property’s tree cover is arguably the most important factor in determining which product will serve you best.

Understand Your Debris Profile

  • Deciduous trees: Oak, maple, and birch trees produce large leaves that most quality guards handle well. Leaves tend to dry and blow off the surface of mesh and microfiltration systems.
  • Coniferous trees: Pine, spruce, and cedar trees produce fine needles, seed cones, and sticky resin that are significantly harder to manage.
  • Mixed canopy: Properties with multiple tree types require a system rated for both large leaves and finer debris.
  • Seed-bearing trees: Maple helicopters and cottonwood fluff can penetrate coarser guards. Microfiltration systems with very fine mesh openings perform better here.
The Gutter Clean System® 25-year product explicitly excludes clogging caused by conifers from its warranty coverage. The Gutter Clean Pro® lifetime product covers coniferous areas under its performance warranty. If you have pine or spruce trees on or near your property, this distinction matters significantly.

3. Your Gutters Must Be in Good Working Order First

A gutter guard cannot compensate for gutters that are already failing. Installing any guard over damaged, misaligned, or blocked gutters will accelerate problems — and any resulting damage will not be covered under the product warranty.

Inspect Your Gutters Before Installation

  • Slope and alignment: Gutters must pitch consistently toward the downspout. Sagging sections cause standing water, which encourages mould, mosquitoes, and ice dams in winter.
  • Seams and joints: Check for separation or sealant failure at gutter joints and corners.
  • Downspouts and elbows: Confirm downspouts are clear, properly connected, and discharge water at least 4 feet away from the foundation.
  • Fascia condition: The fascia board the gutter hangs from must be structurally sound. A gutter guard adds load; rotted fascia will not hold it safely.
  • Hanger spacing: Hangers should be spaced no more than 24 inches apart. Widely spaced or missing hangers allow gutters to flex and separate over time.
The Alu-Rex warranty explicitly excludes damage caused by faulty or improper installation. If underlying gutter defects are not corrected before the guard is installed, any resulting claim may be denied.
